Can You Do Colombo and Galle in a Weekend? Yes - Here's Exactly How

It is one of the most common questions on travel forums: "I have two or three days. Can I do Colombo and Galle, or should I pick one?"

The honest answer? Yes, you can do both. And if you plan it right, you will walk away feeling like you had more than a weekend.

This is not a guide for backpackers with a month to spare. This is for people with limited time - a work trip with a weekend extension, a stopover before flying out, or a quick getaway where every hour counts.

The short answer

Colombo and Galle are only 115 kilometres apart - about two hours by car on the Southern Expressway, or two and a half by train. That makes them an ideal pair for a short trip. You get the energy of Sri Lanka's capital and the heritage charm of a 17th-century Dutch fort in the same weekend.

The key is committing to a split: base yourself in Colombo for the work portion (or the first day), then head south to Galle for the unwind. Each city needs about 24 hours to feel satisfying, so a Friday afternoon to Sunday evening window is perfect.

What's worth doing

In Colombo: Start your evening at Galle Face Green as the sun drops - it is the city's living room, where families fly kites and vendors sell spicy isso vade (prawn fritters) from carts. A sunset walk here costs nothing and gives you the best introduction to Colombo's energy. After dark, head to the Colombo Fort district for dinner at Ministry of Crab if you are splurging, or the street-food scene along Galle Road for something quick and local.

For your working hours, Colombo's café culture is underrated. Places like The Commons in Colombo 3 and Cafe Kumbuk in Borella have reliable WiFi, good coffee, and the kind of atmosphere where you can sit for three hours without being rushed. Both are popular with the city's remote workers for a reason.

In Galle: The fort is the main event, and the best way to experience it is on foot. Walk the ramparts at sunrise or sunset - the lighthouse end offers views over the Indian Ocean that travellers consistently describe as unforgettable. The old streets inside the fort are lined with boutique shops, art galleries, and colonial-era buildings that make every corner feel intentional.

WATCH OUT FOR

The most common mistake is trying to pack too much into one day. Travellers who try to squeeze Colombo's temples, Pettah Market, and Galle Fort's full circuit into the same day end up exhausted and remembering none of it. Pick two things per city and leave room for spontaneity.

Traffic in Colombo is worse than Google Maps predicts. A 15-minute drive can stretch to 45 minutes during rush hour. Factor that into your timing, especially if you have a train or flight to catch.

Another surprise: many Colombo hotels advertise as "in the city centre" but the distance from Galle Face to your hotel can still mean a 20-minute tuk-tuk ride in traffic. Check the specific neighbourhood - Kollupitiya (Colombo 3) and Colombo Fort are the most central for short-stay visitors.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • Train from Colombo to Galle: The coastal train runs multiple times daily. Book second-class or first-class reserved seats in advance - the unreserved cars get crowded. The ocean views from the left side of the train (heading south) are the ones you want.
  • Southern Expressway by car: Fast and well-maintained. A private driver costs about $40-50 one way. Uber and PickMe also work for intercity trips.
  • Best split: Friday evening in Colombo (sunset at Galle Face, dinner in Fort), Saturday morning work at a café, then train to Galle by noon. Saturday evening + Sunday morning in Galle, then back to Colombo airport by Sunday afternoon.
  • Airport proximity: Galle is about 2.5 hours from Bandaranaike International Airport. If you fly out Sunday evening, leave Galle by 2 PM to be safe.

WHERE TO STAY

In Colombo: Shangri-La Colombo is the top pick for short-stay travellers who want convenience and comfort - it sits right on Galle Face Green, has excellent service, and the rooms are consistently praised for their ocean views. For a more local experience, The Kingsbury offers solid value in the same neighbourhood with a rooftop pool that guests love after a day of meetings.

In Galle: The Bartizan Galle Fort earns rave reviews from short-stay guests for its location inside the fort walls and a breakfast that multiple reviewers call "the best in Galle." Arches Fort is another favourite - small, heritage-focused, and a two-minute walk from the ramparts. Both properties let you step out of your room and straight into the fort's best walking routes.

The bottom line

A weekend Colombo-Galle trip works. It works because each city gives you something the other does not: Colombo delivers energy, food, and the urban Sri Lanka experience; Galle gives you history, calm, and a view that makes you forget you are leaving in 24 hours.

Do not try to see everything. See the right things. Pack light, move by train, and let the two cities do what they do best - Colombo to wake you up, Galle to slow you down.
