We analyzed 314,077 verified guest reviews across 50 destinations to find out which travellers rate Sri Lanka's hotels, guesthouses, and homestays highest. The results reveal fascinating patterns about expectations, travel styles, and cultural connections.

Spoiler: The highest-scoring nationality averages 9.21/10. The lowest major nationality still manages 8.50.

The Big Picture: 68.7% of Reviews Are "Excellent"

Before we break down by nationality, here's the overall picture: nearly 7 out of 10 reviews score Sri Lanka accommodation between 9 and 10 out of 10. Only 9% rate their experience below 7.

The takeaway: Sri Lanka accommodation is remarkably consistent. 82.4% of all reviews score 8 or higher. The industry delivers on expectations almost universally.

Which Travelers Rate Sri Lanka Highest?

Now for the question everyone asks: which nationality leaves happiest? We broke down average review scores by nationality for the most common visitor origins.

Bar width = score / 10. Russians are the highest-scoring nationality with only 201 reviews but exceptional scores. France's 819 reviews average 9.09 — the most consistent high-scoring major nationality.

Top Destinations by Guest Satisfaction

Which Sri Lankan destinations earn the highest scores? Some surprises here — the highest-rated spots aren't necessarily the most famous ones.

Kosgoda leads the rankings with just 244 hotel reviews — a small sample but an exceptionally happy one. Among major destinations, Sigiriya (8.75 from 5,363 reviews) and Ella (8.45 from 10,370) hold up well. Sinharaja rainforest lodges (9.12 from 1,570 reviews) are a standout — the most unique accommodation experience in Sri Lanka consistently delivers.

Property Type: Homestays Crush Hotels

Accommodation type matters as much as location. The gap between homestays and hotels is a full 0.74 points — the difference between a good stay and an unforgettable one.

The data is clear: Homestays (9.10) beat hotels (8.36) by a significant margin. Despite representing only 6,024 reviews vs hotels' 154,534, homestay hosts consistently deliver the most memorable stays. This aligns with Sri Lanka's cultural strength — genuine hospitality.

Regional Breakdown: Europeans Score Highest

Grouping nationalities by region reveals some clear patterns. European travellers consistently rate Sri Lanka highest, while South Asian neighbours are the toughest critics.

Europe (8.99) leads by a clear margin. The gap between European and South Asian scores (8.66) is 0.33 points — significant but still shows that even the "harshest" region rates Sri Lanka highly.
