The answer, it turns out, is far more nuanced — and far more useful — than any single “best time.”

The Big Picture: March Is the Sweet Spot

Across all 314,077 reviews, the overall average guest satisfaction score is 8.55/10. But the monthly variation tells a story about seasons, crowds, and expectations.

The standout: March. It achieves the highest guest satisfaction at 8.81/10 while having significantly fewer visitors than the December-February peak. April is a close second at 8.70. The surprise: December has the lowest satisfaction of any month (8.45), despite being peak season with premium prices.

But the national average hides massive regional variation. Here's where it gets interesting.

West Coast vs East Coast vs Hill Country

Sri Lanka's two monsoons create three distinct seasonal zones. The southwest monsoon (May-September) drenches the west and south coasts while leaving the east coast in its best weather. The northeast monsoon (October-January) reverses the pattern. The hill country is its own microclimate — always cool, always green, always worth visiting.

We analyzed 314,077 guest reviews from the BYC.lk database, sourced from Booking.com and other travel platforms. Reviews span from 2018 to July 2026 across 50+ Sri Lankan destinations. The review_date field was parsed to extract month for all formats (YYYY-MM-DD, YYYY-MM, and text month names). Averages were calculated using all available reviews without score filtering.
