Sri Lanka's second-tallest waterfall with a natural infinity pool at the top — the real deal if you're willing to hike for it.
Diyaluma Waterfall is the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, and travelers come for the unique experience of natural infinity pools at the top of the falls. Instead of a head-on view, you can swim right at the edge where the water goes over — a swim-with-a-view situation that few other waterfalls offer. It's an adventurous alternative to the standard waterfall photo stop.
While most tourists crowd Ravana Falls for 10 minutes, Diyaluma gives you a proper waterfall experience. The 220m cascade is spectacular after rain, but the real magic is the natural infinity pool at the summit. The 15–20 minute scramble up the right side is steep and requires moderate fitness — not a paved path, but well worth the effort. The pool at the top is genuinely swimmable, with views over the lowlands that few other falls in Sri Lanka can match.
Getting there from Ella takes about 45 minutes by tuk-tuk or scooter. The approach road is winding but manageable. Best visited after a rainy spell when the flow is strong — during dry months (Jan–March) the waterfall can be reduced to a thin stream. There are no facilities at the top, so bring water and snacks. Combine with a stop at Rawana Falls on the way back. Entry is free.
