Nine Arch Bridge. Before you come.

A scenic railway bridge in lush hills, famous for it's Instagram shot — but be ready for crowds and long waits.

Nine Arch Bridge, Sri Lanka

Nine Arch Bridge draws railway enthusiasts and photographers who want to capture Sri Lanka's most photographed train crossing. The bridge is an elegant piece of colonial engineering set against lush hills, and watching a train cross it — or walking along the tracks yourself — is the payoff. It's a quick, social stop where you'll be sharing the viewpoint with a line of other travelers doing the same thing.

Many visitors expect a serene, off-the-beaten-path spot, but the bridge is often packed with tourists, especially after 9am. Expect to queue for a crowded photo — patience and timing matter. The train itself is unpredictable — the train schedule is unpredictable with delays of 1–3 hours common. If you don't catch the train crossing, it's just a pretty bridge in a jungle.

The walk down from Ella town is steep and can be muddy after rain. A tuk-tuk from Ella town is a smarter choice (approx 500–800 LKR) instead. Once there, the best views are from the hillside path, not directly on the tracks, but most tourists crowd the bridge itself.

The one thing
Arrive before 7am to beat the crowds and catch the first train (usually around 6:30–7:00am). After 9am, you'll be fighting for space with dozens of other visitors.
