Ravana Falls. Before you come.

A roadside waterfall that's more about the photo op than the experience, best visited early to avoid the bus crowds.

Ravana Falls, Sri Lanka

Ravana Falls is a highway-side waterfall that most people see through a tuk-tuk window as they arrive or leave Ella. Travelers stop for a quick photo and to feel the cool mist, but it's more of a landmark than a destination. It suits travelers passing through who want a short, easy break from the road.

Tourists expect a serene waterfall escape, but reality is a chaotic roadside stop with buses disgorging crowds from 10am onwards. Visitors frequently mention the constant honking, selfie sticks, and litter around the base. The falls themselves are pretty in the wet season, but during dry months (Jan–March) the flow can be a trickle, leaving visitors underwhelmed.

The main pool is fenced off, so you can't swim—a common disappointment for those hoping to cool off. Thecave behind the falls is often locked or inaccessible. Most visitors spend 10–15 minutes here before moving on, and many recommend skipping it for Diyaluma Falls if you want a proper waterfall experience.
