Sri Lanka travellers are asking: Is May the worst time to visit Sri Lanka?

The Answer

The short answer is no โ€” May is not the worst time to visit Sri Lanka. It's the wrong time for certain parts of Sri Lanka, and that distinction matters. The southwest monsoon (Yala) arrives around mid-May and drenches the west and south coasts โ€” Colombo, Galle, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa through to Tangalle. These areas get their heaviest rainfall between May and August. But the east coast โ€” Pasikuda, Nilaveli, Arugam Bay, Trincomalee โ€” is enjoying its finest weather right now. The hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy) gets rain year-round but takes on a dramatic, misty beauty during these months that photographers love. So the real question is not whether to visit in May, but where to go.

Watch out for

Some properties in the southwest coast advertise sea views and direct beach access but are situated along stretches that become rough, swimmable only during the November-to-April dry season. In May, the sea here turns turbulent with strong rip currents, and several beaches display warning flags. Check recent seasonal reviews before booking anything on the west or south coast during May-September โ€” a property that was perfect in February may offer a very different experience now.

On the west coast, certain budget hotels near Colombo's beach strip have reported drainage issues during heavy downpours. It's worth confirming ground-floor rooms aren't prone to dampness.

Good to know

May is Vesak season in Sri Lanka โ€” the most important Buddhist festival of the year. In 2026, Vesak falls around late May (the full moon). Cities and towns light up with lanterns, pandals (elaborate illuminated displays), and food stalls giving away free refreshments. It's spectacular. But also expect some alcohol sales restrictions on the full moon day itself and heavier local traffic in Colombo and Kandy.

The US Embassy issued an Amber weather advisory on May 13 for Western Province, Sabaragamuwa, Galle, Matara, and Puttalam. If you're arriving in the next week, plan your first 1-2 days around Colombo's indoor attractions (museums, shopping, food) or head straight east. The weather pattern is predictable: heavy showers in the afternoon, clear mornings. Pack a light rain jacket, plan early starts, and you'll be fine.

Where to stay in May

  • East Coast Picks: Anilana Pasikuda (9.2/10) โ€” calm, shallow waters perfect for swimming in May. Amethyst Resort Pasikuda (9.4/10) โ€” stylish villas steps from the sand. Palm Beach Resort & Spa Nilaveli (8.9/10) โ€” excellent mid-range option with direct beach access.
  • Hill Country Alternative: 98 Acres Resort & Spa (9.6/10) in Ella โ€” unparalleled valley views at their most dramatic during the monsoon. Ella Nature Paradise (9.3/10) โ€” boutique eco-retreat where the rain adds to the atmosphere.
  • Surf Season: Arugam Bay's main point break is at its peak from May to September. Arugam Bay Beach House (9.0/10) โ€” well-located for surf access. Quieter now than December-March but the waves are world-class.

The bottom line

Sri Lanka doesn't have a bad season โ€” it has two seasons that suit different coasts. May through September belongs to the east coast and hill country, while the west and south take their turn from December to April. Plan your route to match the monsoon, and you'll find a version of Sri Lanka most visitors never see.
