Kandy Lake. Before you come.

A scenic artificial lake in the heart of Kandy, perfect for a peaceful stroll but often crowded with locals and tourists.

Kandy Lake, Sri Lanka

Travelers circle Kandy Lake as part of the Kandy experience — a clockwise walk around the water that offers glimpses of the Temple of the Tooth through the trees. The lake is man-made but feels integral to the city, and the walk is an easy way to orient yourself and watch local life unfold.

Many visitors expect a serene, untouched natural lake, but Kandy Lake is a man-made reservoir surrounded by a busy road and constant foot traffic. Visitors often mention the pleasant walk around the perimeter (about 3 km), but note that the path can be crowded, especially in the late afternoon. The reflection of the hills and the Temple of the Tooth at dusk is indeed beautiful, but the noise from traffic and vendors can break the tranquility some hope for.

The presence of large monitor lizards and many birds, which add a wild touch. However, the lake can smell a bit stagnant in warmer weather. The walk is free and takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace, but don't expect a quiet escape — it's more of a local hangout spot.
