Visitors often compare this to Dambullas more famous cave temple, but Mulkirigala is far quieter and less commercialised. The 7-tiered complex involves a serious climb—around 500 steps—that leaves many out of breath, especially in the heat. Real the murals and Buddha statues are impressive but faded, and the lack of crowds makes it feel like a hidden gem, though some find the upkeep patchy.

The biggest surprise is the monkeys: they're bold and will snatch food or bags if you're not careful. Mention the guides at the base are pushy and expect a tip, even if you decline their services. The views from the top are stunning, but the whole visit takes 1.5–2 hours minimum, so plan accordingly.
