Bentota is a classic Sri Lankan beach town where the Bentota River meets the Indian Ocean. The beach is wide and golden, the water is calm for swimming, and the food — especially the buffets at the big hotels — is consistently excellent. Guests rave about the grilled prawns and fresh breakfast spreads, and the staff genuinely make you feel welcome.
But Bentota isn't a hidden gem. The beach gets crowded, especially on weekends, and many hotels lack a truly private stretch of sand. Some properties are showing their age — think worn furniture and dodgy fixtures. Wi-Fi can be frustratingly slow, so don't plan on streaming anything. If you want seclusion, check whether your hotel has its own beach access.
Two nights is the sweet spot here. Use your time for a river safari at dawn, a beach day, and a visit to Brief Garden or Kande Vihara. December to April is the best window for sun, but expect higher prices. Book your hotel early — the best ones fill up fast. Bentota is a solid choice for a relaxed beach break, just don't expect untouched paradise.
