Hikkaduwa Coral Reef, Hikkaduwa — Sri Lanka
Hikkaduwa Coral Reef Must
The reef runs parallel to the beach and is accessible by snorkel directly from the shore. Turtles are common. Go in the morning before boat traffic stirs up the sand.
Surfing (Narigama Beach), Hikkaduwa — Sri Lanka
Surfing (Narigama Beach) Must
Consistent beginner to intermediate waves. Surf schools along the beach are affordable and well-run. Best Nov-Apr.
Hikkaduwa Lake, Hikkaduwa — Sri Lanka
Hikkaduwa Lake Half day
Inland from the main strip, accessible by tuk tuk. Boat rides through mangroves, monitor lizards, fishing villages. Quiet and local-feeling.
Tsunami Photo Museum, Hikkaduwa — Sri Lanka
Tsunami Photo Museum Tip
Small, sobering museum documenting the 2004 tsunami. Worth 30 minutes for the context it gives the coastline.
Diving, Hikkaduwa — Sri Lanka
Diving Half day
Several PADI dive centres on the strip. Wreck diving and coral diving both available. Good visibility Nov-Apr.
Guests praise
From 7699 reviews · properties named freely
The Riff Hikkaduwa delivers a consistently exceptional experience where every room offers a direct sea view, and the saltwater infinity pool is a standout feature that guests find unforgettable.
Haritha Villas excels with its private pool villas and dedicated butler service, where staff like Lasantha and JC provide a level of personalised attention that makes guests feel truly cared for.
Breakfast at several properties is a highlight, with guests praising the outstanding quality and variety, often calling it the best they had during their entire trip in Sri Lanka.
The combination of attentive service and thoughtful amenities—like complimentary water throughout the day, beach towels brought to your lounger, and well-maintained facilities—creates a seamless, relaxing stay.
The beachfront location and tranquil atmosphere are consistently appreciated, with guests noting the direct beach access and the calm setting as perfect for unwinding.
Watch out for
Patterns across reviews · no properties named
Some properties in Hikkaduwa have serious cleanliness issues — rooms arrive dirty, ants are common, and air conditioning units drip water or smell bad enough that guests had to wrap clothes around pillows to sleep.
A handful of hotels are significantly overpriced for what they deliver, with guests checking out early because the experience was so far below expectations — unprofessional staff, poor maintenance, and rooms that feel more like a hostel than a four-star stay.
Outdoor showers sound charming but can be impractical — they lack privacy and some guests found the setup awkward, with drains placed oddly in the bathroom.
Communication breakdowns at restaurant counters are a recurring frustration — orders get misunderstood and completely different dishes arrive, making dining feel like a gamble rather than a pleasure.
Noise levels can ruin the peace at some properties, especially those marketed as quiet retreats — thin walls, loud neighbours, or nearby activity can turn a relaxing stay into a restless one.

Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka's oldest tourist destinations and it shows in the best way - it's well set up, well priced, and confident about what it is. The reef is the star. Snorkelling directly off the beach to see turtles and coral is something guests consistently rate as their best Sri Lanka moment.

The main strip is lively without being as overtly party-focused as Mirissa. Budget guesthouses, surf shops, and seafood restaurants line the road. It's not pretending to be a boutique destination - it's good-value, well-organised, and honest about its beach-and-water offer.

Guests who come for the reef and the surf rate Hikkaduwa very highly. Guests who come expecting a quiet, unspoiled beach are in the wrong place. Know which one you are before you book.
