Mirissa has the best whale watching in Sri Lanka and one of the most beautiful bays on the south coast. The beach curves in a perfect arc and the coconut palms are not a postcard - they're actually there. It delivers on its photographs in a way that many famous beaches don't.
The beach strip has become party-oriented in peak season. Loud bars, fire shows, and late nights are the main strip's offer from about 8pm. Guests who rate Mirissa highest consistently stay slightly back from the main strip or at the quieter eastern end. A 5-minute walk makes a significant difference.
Two nights is the minimum to do the beach and a whale watching trip. Three nights if you want a day trip to Galle or Weligama. Whale watching is the reason to be here Nov-Apr - if that's your season, book the boat before you book your accommodation.
