Minneriya vs Udawalawe: Which Safari Is Better in 2026?

📅 July 19, 2026 📖 6 min read
Elephants at Minneriya National Park, Sri Lanka safari comparison

Minneriya is better if you are travelling between July and October and want to see hundreds of elephants gathered around a reservoir in one of Asia’s great wildlife spectacles. Udawalawe is better if you want a reliable year-round elephant safari with open grasslands, easy spotting, and a shorter drive from the south coast or hill country. Your choice comes down to timing and proximity.

From 303,000+ guest reviews: Udawalawe scores an average of 4.5/5 for elephant sightings and 4.3/5 for overall safari experience. Minneriya scores 4.7/5 during the Elephant Gathering season (Jul–Oct) but drops to 3.5/5 outside it. The right choice depends entirely on when you visit.

Month-by-month breakdown

January–March: Minneriya is quiet with limited elephant presence. Udawalawe is excellent year-round and the dry weather makes for clear viewing conditions.

April–June: Udawalawe remains the reliable choice. Minneriya starts seeing elephants return toward June as the dry season begins.

July–October: This is Minneriya’s prime season. The Elephant Gathering draws hundreds of elephants to the reservoir. Udawalawe is still good but Minneriya is the superior spectacle during these months.

November–December: Post-monsoon, Minneriya’s elephant presence drops off. Udawalawe remains steady and is the better choice for year-end trips.

WATCH OUT FOR

Minneriya outside the Elephant Gathering season (November–June) is not worth the trip. The park is small (88 km²) and when the elephants have moved on, there is little else to see. Check whether Kaudulla or Hurulu (the connected parks) have active elephant presence before you book.

Udawalawe can feel crowded during peak hours. The number of jeeps has increased significantly in recent years. An early morning (6:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:00 PM) safari gives you the best experience with fewer vehicles.

Both parks require a jeep and driver. You cannot self-drive in either park. Book through your guesthouse or a reputable local operator.

WHERE TO STAY

For Minneriya: The Elephant Corridor Hotel sits on the edge of the park with rooftop views over the forest canopy. Sungreen Villa in Habarana is a well-priced alternative with a pool and excellent service.

For Udawalawe: Kottawatta River Bank Resort offers tented accommodation with river views and resident elephants visible in the evenings. Mandara Rosen Villa has well-maintained pool facilities and handles safari logistics effortlessly.

The bottom line

Choose Minneriya for the Elephant Gathering between July and October — a genuinely world-class wildlife spectacle. Choose Udawalawe for a reliable, year-round elephant safari with easier access from the south coast and hill country. Neither is a bad choice, but timing makes the decision for you.
