The Ella–Kandy train is one of the world's most scenic railway journeys, and people ride it specifically for the experience of sitting by an open door, wind in their face, as the train winds through tea plantations, misty valleys, and tunnel after tunnel. It suits travelers who believe the journey is the destination — the 7-hour ride is an attraction in itself, not just a way to get between two towns.

Tourists expect a serene, Instagram-perfect journey with empty carriages and uninterrupted views of tea plantations and waterfalls. In reality, the train is packed—especially the observation car—with people jostling for a window seat.shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, constant selfie sticks, and aparty atmosphere that drowns out the scenery. The famousright side tip works for the best views, but you'll still be fighting for space.

The journey from Ella to Kandy takes about 7 hours, but delays are common—report 1-2 hour waits. The train itself is old, with hard wooden seats (unless you book 1st class, which sells out weeks ahead).
