Families and animal lovers come to Dehiwala Zoo for a straightforward zoo experience with a focus on local wildlife. The collection includes Sri Lankan species you might not spot in the wild — leopards, bears, and a range of birds. It's an easy half-day outing that keeps kids engaged.

Many visitors expect a modern, well-maintained zoo, but Dehiwala feels stuck in the past — enclosures are small, signage is limited, and some animals look lethargic. The butterfly garden and reptile house are genuine highlights, with the butterfly garden often described asmagicalandpeaceful.The elephant show, however, is universally panned as sad and exploitative — skip it entirely.

Crowds are manageable on weekdays but can get chaotic on weekends and public holidays. The zoo is compact, so you can cover it in 2–3 hours. Bring your own snacks as the food options inside are overpriced and mediocre.
