Which Nationalities Love Sri Lanka the Most? A Data Study of 25,196 Guest Reviews

Every traveller has a theory about which nationalities enjoy Sri Lanka most. The Germans love the mountains. The British love the trains. The Russians never want to leave. But until now, nobody had actually measured it.

We analysed 25,196 real guest reviews that include the reviewer’s nationality — a subset of our full database of 314,077 verified reviews of Sri Lanka stays collected between April 2024 and September 2025. Every review carries a satisfaction score out of 10, so we can rank nationalities by how happy their travellers actually were — not by how they describe the trip, but by the number they gave it.

The results upend a few assumptions. The most loyal visitors come from an unexpected place. The most demanding come from the country that is closest to Sri Lanka. And one of the world’s most enthusiastic travel markets — Germany — turns out to be its harshest critic in a very specific situation.

The headline ranking: who scores Sri Lanka highest?

Across all 25,196 nationality-tagged reviews, the average score is 8.70/10 (slightly above the 8.61 average for the full database — reviewers who state their nationality tend to be slightly more generous). But the spread between nationalities is large: a full 0.71 points separates the happiest from the least happy.

Top 15 nationalities with at least 50 reviews. Full country list is 139 nationalities; we exclude tiny samples below 50 reviews to avoid noise.

The counterintuitive finding: India is the toughest crowd

Here is the result that surprised us most. India — Sri Lanka’s closest neighbour, its single largest source of foreign visitors, and the nationality with the most reviews in our dataset (3,200) — scores 8.59/10, the fifth-lowest of any nationality with a meaningful sample. Only 61.3% of Indian reviewers gave 9 or higher, versus 75.9% of French reviewers.

It is not that Indians dislike Sri Lanka. 8.59 is still a strong score — it would be a four-and-a-half-star average anywhere. But relative to every other major market, Indian travellers are consistently harder to impress. The pattern holds across every travel style:

French couples are the happiest segment in the entire dataset — 9.26/10. German couples are right behind at 9.24. The pattern flips hard for Germans travelling in groups: German groups of friends score just 8.27, the lowest of any major-market segment we measured. Germans love Sri Lanka as couples and solo travellers, but group trips disappoint them.

The bottom of the table

Two patterns stand out. First, South and West Asian travellers (Bangladesh, India, UAE, Gulf states, Pakistan, Maldives) cluster at the bottom — every nationality from this region sits in the lower half of the table. These are short-haul travellers with similar food, climate and beaches at home, so the novelty factor that drives long-haul scores is absent. Second, Sri Lankans themselves rate domestic stays 8.73 — warmer than their neighbours, cooler than the Europeans, and exactly what you would expect from locals who know the country intimately and judge it against home.

Where each nationality is happiest

The averages hide an even more useful layer: which regions each nationality loves. This is where the data becomes genuinely actionable for planning a trip — or for a hotelier deciding where to invest.

British travellers are Cultural Triangle devotees. Their single happiest place in Sri Lanka is Sigiriya at 9.30 — the rock fortress out-scores even Ella’s famous train-and-tea experience (9.20) for UK visitors. Indians, by contrast, give Sigiriya 9.01 but reserve their highest marks for Dambulla (9.14) and Weligama (9.10) — and their lowest for Negombo (8.37) and Yala (8.39). Chinese travellers are the biggest Yala fans of all: 9.36, the highest region score for any nationality we measured.

One region disappoints nearly everyone: Negombo appears in the “weakest” column for all four nationalities above. It is the classic first-night transit stop — convenient, close to the airport, but not what anyone flew to Sri Lanka to see. The data suggests the same thing our Negombo guide does: treat it as a launchpad, not a destination.

What this means for your trip

• If you are travelling as a couple, you are in the happiest demographic in Sri Lanka. Couples average 8.91 across all nationalities — above solo travellers (8.86), groups (8.71) and families (8.64). Sri Lanka’s mix of boutique villas, candlelit seafood dinners and empty beaches is built for two.
• Families are the toughest sell. Every major nationality scores lower as families than as couples — the gap is widest for Australians (8.64 vs 9.02). Long drives between destinations and limited child-friendly infrastructure are the usual suspects in review text.
• British and Australian travellers should put Sigiriya and Galle at the top of the list. These are the regions where your compatriots were happiest — and satisfaction is contagious.
• Indian travellers: skip the south-coast backpacker circuit, head to the Cultural Triangle. Your fellow Indians rated Dambulla, Weligama and Sigiriya highest, and Ella — the Instagram favourite — lowest. If you want the experience your countrymen actually loved, go north and inland.
• For hoteliers: the homestay effect we found in our seasonal study holds across nationalities — smaller, owner-run properties consistently out-score hotels for every major market, and the gap is widest for the European travellers who are your most loyal repeat visitors.

Methodology & caveats

This study covers 25,196 reviews with an explicit reviewer nationality from the BYC database of 314,077 verified Sri Lanka property reviews (April 2024 – September 2025). Rankings include only nationalities with 50+ reviews to keep samples statistically meaningful. Scores are the reviewer’s own rating out of 10, averaged; “% scoring 9+” is the share of reviews at 9 or 10 — the threshold we use for “would enthusiastically recommend.” Travel-purpose breakdowns cover the ~90,000 reviews that state purpose. Nationality is self-declared by the reviewer and reflects their Booking.com profile country. Regional scores use only reviews tied to a specific destination region. Small-sample nationalities (e.g. many African and Latin American markets) are excluded from rankings but included in the full 139-country dataset.
