Gregory Lake Ticket Price 2026: Entrance Fee & Boat Ride Costs
You are standing at the gate with small notes in your pocket, the board lists three different tickets, and a man on a pony is offering a fourth. Nobody will tell you plainly which of these fees you actually have to pay — so here is the whole price list for Gregory Lake (Lake Gregory) in Nuwara Eliya for 2026, gate by gate and boat by boat.
The short answer
Foreign adults pay roughly LKR 200–300 (about USD 0.70–1.00) to enter the ticketed part of Gregory Lake; Sri Lankan nationals pay LKR 20–100. Phases II and III of the lake shore are free to walk. Everything else is charged separately: a swan pedal boat is about LKR 500 per half hour, a motorboat about LKR 1,500 per 30 minutes, a pony ride about LKR 300 per 15 minutes, and bicycle hire about LKR 100 per hour. There is no booking system, no online ticket, and no foreigner-only gate — you pay in cash at the entrance you happen to walk up to.
Below is the full price list, why figures vary by gate, and how to pay as little as possible without missing the one thing worth paying for.
Gregory Lake entrance fee 2026
- Foreign adult (Phase I, the town-centre gate): about LKR 200–300 — roughly USD 0.70–1.00. Reports vary between LKR 200 and LKR 300 depending on the gate and the year, which is why you will see both numbers quoted online. Both are broadly correct.
- Sri Lankan nationals: about LKR 20–100, and often free for children.
- Phases II and III: free. These are the stretches of shoreline away from the main gate and the amusement zone. You can walk a good part of the lake without paying anything at all.
- Children: usually reduced or waived; ask at the gate rather than assuming.
- Opening hours: roughly 8 AM–6 PM daily. Boats stop going out well before dusk, so the ticket window closes earlier in practice than the gate does.
This is the key point most visitors miss: the entrance fee is tiny and the activities are the real spend. Decide your boat budget before you queue, not after a handler has already helped you into a life jacket.
Gregory Lake boat ride price 2026
- Swan pedal boat: about LKR 500 per half hour (USD 1.70). Per boat, not per person — two people share one pedalo for the same money. This is the best value thing on the lake.
- Rowing boat: similar to the pedalo, in the LKR 500–800 range for the half hour.
- Motorboat: about LKR 1,500 for 30 minutes (USD 5). Faster, louder, and the price is typically for the boat, so it improves if you split it between three or four people.
- Jet ski (when operating): a per-session price well above the boats — negotiate before you ride.
Best time for a boat ride: 4–6 PM. The wind drops, the light turns gold, and the weekend queues have thinned. Midday is the worst value for the same ticket because the water looks its murkiest and the queue is at its longest.
Other Gregory Lake prices
- Pony ride: about LKR 300 per 15 minutes (USD 1). Handlers will approach you — agree the price and the duration before you get on.
- Bicycle hire: about LKR 100 per hour.
- Snack stalls (roast corn, vadai, tea): LKR 100–300 per item; grazing your way around the loop costs about LKR 500–1,000.
- Tuk-tuk within Nuwara Eliya: LKR 400–600 (USD 1.30–2.00), under five minutes.
- From Nanu Oya railway station: LKR 1,000–1,500 (USD 3–5), about 20 minutes. This is how most people arrive on the hill-country line.
Why the prices vary by gate
Gregory Lake is not one fenced park with one ticket booth. It is a reservoir ringed by a public road, a formal ticketed section, and two further shoreline phases with different owners and different gates. Each gate sets its own price on the day, and Sri Lankan ticket prices move with inflation.
The practical consequences: keep small notes (a LKR 500 note for a LKR 200 gate is how you end up not getting change), buy your ticket at the gate yourself rather than letting a self-appointed "guide" handle it, and treat every number above as a close estimate rather than a fixed tariff. WATCH OUT FOR
- The "guide" at the gate. Nobody needs a guide to walk around a lake in the middle of a town. If someone offers to sort out your entrance fee for you, you are being overcharged — walk to the booth and pay the window price.
- Paying for phases that are free. If you only want the lakeside walk and the views back across the water, you can do a large part of that on the free shoreline without buying a ticket at all.
- Agreeing an activity price after the ride. Boats, ponies and bicycles are all meant to be agreed upfront. Fix the number and the duration before you start.
- Paying foreigner rates on an activity. Activity prices are generally per boat or per ride, not per nationality — the only clearly tiered fee is the entrance gate.
- Arriving at peak Saturday afternoon. Not a fee, but it turns a USD 5 afternoon into a queue. Golden hour on a weekday is the same price and a far better outing.
GOOD TO KNOW
- Cash only. Carry small rupee notes; card acceptance on the lakeside is effectively nil.
- No advance booking. There is no online ticket system for Gregory Lake — turn up and pay.
- Altitude 1,868 m. It is genuinely cold in the evening; bring a layer even on a sunny afternoon.
- Looped walk: 30–50 minutes, flat and easy, which is why it works so well after Horton Plains.
- Best time overall: 4 PM to sunset. Golden light, fewer people, shorter boat queues, same prices.
- Combine it with the Pedro Tea Estate or a walk up into town — the lake alone is a one-to-two-hour stop, not a day.
WHERE TO STAY
You do not need to be lakeside — the lake is 15–25 minutes on foot from most of Nuwara Eliya town, and a tuk-tuk from the hills above town costs about LKR 400–600. What matters is being central enough to walk down in the late afternoon. The town's stays are reviewed honestly in our guide to whether Gregory Lake is actually worth visiting, and the hill country's best-rated bases are ranked in our destination satisfaction ranking.
The bottom line
Budget about USD 4–10 per person for a Gregory Lake afternoon — LKR 200–300 at the gate, LKR 500 for a shared pedal boat, LKR 500–1,000 if you graze the snack stalls. That is the entire cost of one of the cheapest genuinely pleasant hours in the hill country. Pay the gate yourself, agree the boat price first, and go at golden hour.
