The good news is that you are standing at the best-connected junction in northern Sri Lanka. Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla are all within two hours; the east coast is three; a leopard safari is 45 minutes away; and the Yal Devi train can carry you to Jaffna or Colombo in half a day. The catch is that the options point in very different directions — ancient cities, beaches, wildlife, the far north — so the right answer depends on your season and your pace. Option 1 — The Cultural Triangle: Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya and Dambulla (any season)

If you came to Anuradhapura for the ancient cities, the obvious and best next move is to finish the triangle — and the data says the best of it is still ahead of you. Sigiriya scores 9.00/10 across 18,125 reviews, the highest of any major destination in Sri Lanka; Polonnaruwa and Dambulla both sit at 8.81. The classic sequence runs Anuradhapura → Polonnaruwa (~100 km, 2 hours by bus, the better-preserved of the two ancient capitals) → Sigiriya (~55 km from Polonnaruwa) → Dambulla cave temples (20 minutes from Sigiriya) → Kandy. Option 2 — The east coast: Trincomalee and Nilaveli (June–September)

Between June and September, the east coast is the data-backed answer: it is the only coast in its dry season, and it is only three hours away. The bus from Anuradhapura to Trincomalee takes about 3 hours (~130 km, roughly 450 LKR per the official March 2026 fare schedule). Wilpattu National Park is 45 minutes from Anuradhapura’s centre — the closest big-cat safari to any major Sri Lankan city. It is the country’s largest park, and its leopard sightings come with almost no crowds: entry runs about USD 35–40 per foreign adult per day, with a half-day jeep around USD 45–65 split up to six ways. Option 4 — Jaffna and the far north (October–May)

If you are travelling October to May — or if you have already seen the triangle — the road north is wide open. Option 5 — Kandy, the hill country, or straight to the airport

If your trip is moving south or ending, Kandy is the natural gateway — and the hill country beyond it holds its score above 8.5 in every single month of the year. Kandy (8.58/10 across 23,459 reviews) is about 3.5–4 hours from Anuradhapura by road through Dambulla; there is no direct train, because Kandy sits on a different rail line, but the bus connection is easy and frequent. What to know before you leave Anuradhapura

Book the Yal Devi seat a day ahead at Anuradhapura station if you are heading north or to Colombo — reserved first- and second-class seats sell out, and unreserved carriages on the long runs are crowded. For buses, the main bus station runs frequent services to Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Kandy from early morning; the Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee departures are the ones to catch before 9 AM if you want the full day at the other end.
