Who Likes Sri Lanka Most? 353,633 Reviews by Nationality (2026)

Every Sri Lanka hotel review carries a score between 1 and 10. What almost nobody looks at is who wrote it. Break 353,633 verified guest reviews down by the reviewer's own nationality and a clear pattern appears: some countries' travellers consistently love Sri Lanka more than others, and the spread is wide enough to change which destinations you pick — and which properties you can safely trust.

We ran the numbers on the full corpus. Here is what the data says about who likes Sri Lanka most, where each nationality is happiest, and why the gap exists.

The short answer

Two caveats before the tables. First, this is Booking.com review data, where the score scale runs to 10; guests do not leave reviews evenly, and a traveller who had a disappointing stay is more likely to bother than one who had a merely fine one. Second, nationality here is the reviewer's own declared country — genuine signal, but it mixes up cultural expectations, trip type and the price bracket each group typically books. We are measuring how people score, not an objective quality of the island. Treat it as a lens, not a verdict.

The nationality ranking

Average score each nationality gives Sri Lanka hotels, counting only countries with at least 800 reviews so nothing rests on a handful of stays:

The spread is 0.61 points end to end — meaningful but not dramatic. On a 10-point scale, everyone likes Sri Lanka. What the ranking really tells you is that a German guest and an Italian guest can stay in the same property, pay the same rate, and walk away half a point apart in what they wrote. That is worth knowing when you are reading a score.

Where each nationality is happiest

Take the corpus region by region and the picture sharpens. Here are the regions where the largest nationalities score the highest, counting only cells with at least 100 reviews:

The consistency here is the story. Sigiriya is the single destination where every major nationality scores highest — German, Spanish, French, British, Italian, Dutch, Australian, Japanese and Indian guests all peak there. That is not a national preference; it is one destination genuinely over-delivering for everybody. Across our 50 regions, Sigiriya holds a 9-or-above score in 77.5% of its 21,415 reviews, and Habarana just next door does even better at 80.8%.

The destinations guests actually rate highest

Percentage of reviews scoring 9 or above, by region, counting regions with at least 2,800 reviews:

Read this table next to the nationality one and the practical rule falls out. Colombo and Negombo carry the most reviews of any region on the island — they are where every trip starts and ends — and they are also the two lowest-scoring among the big regions. Travellers do not dislike them; they simply use them as a transit night, score the stay on a functional standard, and move on. The places people rave about are the ones they chose deliberately.

The same property, five different verdicts

The single most useful thing this data does is let you compare nationalities head to head on the same properties, using only cells backed by at least 100 reviews. In Sigiriya — the most consistently loved destination on the island — the gap between the most and least generous national group is 0.59 points:

So when a Sigiriya property shows an 8.9 overall, it is not a mediocre hotel. German guests likely scored it near 9.4 and Indian guests near 8.8. The number in the middle is a blend. That is why the highest-value habit when you are booking is not to hunt for the single best score but to look at how many reviews the score rests on — a 9.6 from 800 guests is a very different fact from a 9.6 from twelve.

Property types: what the data rewards

Average score by property type across the full corpus:

• Homestays: 9.14 — the highest-scoring category on the island by a clear margin, across 7,186 reviews.
• Villas: 8.76 — 24,700 reviews.
• Guesthouses: 8.66 — 9,000 reviews.
• Hotels: 8.43 — 186,840 reviews. The biggest category, and structurally the lowest-scoring.

The gap of 0.71 points between homestays and hotels is the largest single effect in the whole dataset — nearly three times the gap between the most and least generous nationality. The mechanism is not mysterious: homestays are run by families who live on site, the accommodation is small enough that problems get fixed before they fester, and the interaction is personal. Large hotels have more rooms, more shift changes, and more places for a stay to go merely correctly. If you want the highest odds of a memorable stay and do not need a pool, the data says book a family-run place.

What this means for your trip

• Do not distrust a good score because of who wrote it. The nationality effect is real but modest — about a quarter of a point. Review volume is the stronger signal.
• Trust destination-level patterns over individual scores. Sigiriya, Habarana, Sinharaja and Tissamaharama deliver 9+ to nearly everyone; Jaffna, Trincomalee and Nilaveli have narrower appeal and lower ceilings. That is route-planning information.
• If a place sits under 8.0 with hundreds of reviews, believe it. Nobody's cultural scoring habits can drag a genuinely good property that far down.
• Book a homestay or villa over a hotel of the same price where you can. The corpus rewards small, owner-run accommodation by almost three quarters of a point.
• Use the transit regions for what they are. Colombo and Negombo score lowest because most guests only sleep there. If you give either a real day, you will likely beat the average.
