Every month in Sri Lanka, ranked by 72,000+ real guest reviews. We pulled every review with a recorded stay month from our full corpus of 314,000+ verified hotel reviews and averaged the guest score (out of 10) by calendar month. The result upends the usual advice: the “off-season” months travellers are told to avoid — May, September, October — score as well as or better than the December–January peak, and there is no genuinely bad month on the island (the full spread is just 8.75–8.91).

The full ranking (best → worst)

Average guest score out of 10, by stay month, across 72,231 reviews with a recorded month:

• March — 8.91/10 (7,176 reviews). The clear winner. Southwest-coast dry season still running, peak crowds gone, quieter beaches and better value than January–February.
• September — 8.89/10 (4,058). The east coast’s tail-end prime; warm seas, minimal crowds, and prices already dropping.
• May — 8.88/10 (8,154) & October — 8.88/10 (3,756). The two “shoulder” months travellers are routinely told to skip score among the very best — the honest reason is that far fewer tourists means happier stays, whatever the changeable weather.
• November — 8.87/10 (4,142). Early dry season returns to the southwest, ahead of the December price surge.
• June — 8.86/10 (7,535) & February — 8.86/10 (7,939). The most reliably sunny month (February) is strong, but June’s east-coast perfection matches it.
• July — 8.85/10 (3,809). East-coast peak season on Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay.
• April — 8.84/10 (5,735). The dry-season shoulder; Sinhala & Tamil New Year mid-month.
• December — 8.79/10 (5,872). Great south-coast weather but the busiest, priciest fortnight of the year drags the score down.
• August — 8.77/10 (5,353). East coast peak, but the island-wide crowd & Esala Perahera season.
• January — 8.75/10 (8,702). The most reviews of any month — and the lowest score. Peak-season crowds, peak prices, and booked-out properties weigh on satisfaction. Not bad — just the busiest.

Pick your coast by season, not the calendar. The ranking above averages the whole island, but the two-monsoon split means the “best month” depends entirely on which coast you want. December–April is prime for the southwest (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa); May–September is prime for the east (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay, Nilaveli).

Two genuinely counterintuitive takeaways worth planning around:

• If you want fewer crowds, quieter beaches and better hotel value, the “shoulder” months of May, September, October and November are among the highest-rated stays in the entire dataset — the opposite of the busy-season narrative.
• The December–January “peak” scores the lowest of the year — not because the weather is bad, but because every tourist is there at once. The data quietly recommends timing your peak-season trip for late February or March instead and getting the same (or better) weather with a fraction of the crowds.

We averaged the guest review score (out of 10) for every review in our corpus that carried a recorded stay month, then bucketed by calendar month. The chart covers 72,231 reviews with a parseable month (the remainder lack a usable date and are excluded). Scores are the mean guest rating, unweighted by property. Because these are per-stay satisfaction ratings — not rainfall figures — a high score reflects the whole experience (weather, crowds, prices, availability), which is why peak-season months rate lower despite fine weather.
